You then get into the prologues, and boy, it shows a darker side, to the series. First thing that hits you when you start the game is the background music for the prologues of the characters: Fetus, a very creepy song. I naturally thought that Tekken 4 was a dark game from the time I played it at 6 years old for the first time (Got the game 2002 Christmas :p), and even now, I believe the game is darker. TL DR: T4 isn't really 'dark' its just realistic, T5 is the best sequel in the series. T6 and T7 are really just the same old formula with different mechanics added and better graphics. It's the biggest step up in a sequel's perspective, whilst T4 was the most different.

Not to mention, it had (arguably) the best music (it's very close to T3) and probably the best boss fight of the series AND you have to think about the fact that from any game in the series (other than T3) T5 is the most solid in all aspects of the game. To me- T3 is my first tekken game and what I like to think is the real tekken game that started it all, and T5 is it's true successor. They really took the T3 formula and perfected it with T5. Like every character had a weakness and a strong point and it felt very unique. I think T4 is a great game because of immersion, but gameplay wise everyone would say T5 is great because it's a very balanced game compared to previous games. Same for endings, they may not be more dark but definitely more realistic, and people seem to think that realistic = dark ala Dark Knight. And when fighting is super realistic and not cartoony it feels dark because, I mean, it's 2 people trying to hurt eachother. T4 seems to be the most immersion focused game, and the overall theme is a bit realistic.
